People have got nicknames. Louis, of course, who was no exception, got nicknames just like you and I did. His friends called him dipper because of his mouth that could drink an entirely-full dipper water in one gulp. When riding on the wagon with the family, he helped blow on a horn to let people know the coming of the wagon, to see if anyone wanted to sell things to or buy things from the family. Even then, Louis started showing his interests in music. In his free time, he would go wherever live music was playing, most kinds of which in New Orleans were jazz music. Bands there usually played in bars and dance halls. Although little Louis was too young to enter those places, he would stood outside and enjoyed the music drifting out from the bars and dance halls. Joe Oliver, who played the cornet, was his favorite musician.
